cd-beulah-yokocover.jpg talking yoko with beulah

Beulah is this 'alternative' band that has a new album out, simply titled YOKO

The cover art looked to me like a direct hommage to Y. So the title just had to be about her.

Here is what they replied to my email, when I asked them about it:

oh man, that's a really long answer. however, the short one is: i was thinking about yoko's piece "yes" shown at the indica gallery in '66 and thought "wow what a great word, it still has such power." anyway, i wanted a single word that had power like that, provocative, emotional, stimulating. i thought of words like hate, love etc. and nothing was really moving me. in fact, the word yoko gets far more of a reaction from people than those aforementioned words. they've kind of lost their meaning or power. anyway, thematically the record is about love and yoko certainly embodies love. she was part of a love affair that was shakepearean in scope and one of the most fascinating relationships of the last century. musically, the record is the most diverse, challenging, complicated, and artistic statement we've ever made. for a band compared to the beatles, it felt right to name it after yoko 'cause it translates to change and growth. not the best answer i know, but i hope that helps.
