all the news for December

hi -- here's a large group of newsbits for DEC 02002. Working chronologically.

Slick packages

[11/30/2002 10:43:46 AM | richard joly] Francine Prose rather slick packages another review of that Muses book http://www.athensnewspapers.com/stories/112402/boo_20021124030.shtml [edit]

Frankly tedious

[12/1/2002 5:50:14 AM | richard joly] frankly tedious "The Lives of the Muses" contains much interesting material (though the chapters on Elizabeth Siddal and Yoko Ono are frankly tedious and the Dalis are downright disgusting). But some weaknesses are common to all nine of Ms. Prose's sketches. http://www.washtimes.com/books/20021201-87840937.htm [edit]

Peace Coalition Rally

[12/1/2002 6:06:28 AM | richard joly] MyInKy To print this page, select File then Print from your browser URL: http://www.myinky.com/ecp/arts_beat/article/0,1626,ECP_792_1577590,00.html 'Lennon Nite' will muster peace voices peace By Roger McBain - Arts Beat December 1, 2002 "Give Peace a Chance," the anti-war song John Lennon and Yoko Ono recorded with Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers and a Hare Krishna chorus, seems a likely pick for "Electric" Larry Miller's "John Lennon Nite" memorial Dec. 8, the 22nd anniversary of the date a deranged man with a handgun shot and killed the former Beatle outside Lennon's New York City apartment building. "Imagine" and "All You Need is Love" are other likely choices for this year's memorial, which is also being billed as a "Peace Coalition Rally" with "a mustering of scattered voices opposed to further violence and war." Miller, a local businessman, musician and decorated military veteran who was wounded in Vietnam, organized his first Lennon tribute in the early 1980s. Two years ago, he organized a Dec. 8 memorial, with music, poetry and comments to mark the 20th anniversary of Lennon's death. About 100 people attended. Last year, the memorial included ex-Beatle George Harrison, who died Nov. 29, 2001, in England. This year, Miller invites singers, musicians, poets and anyone else to get up on stage, sing along in the audience or simply attend to help celebrate the music and the lives of both men and the Beatles, and to show their support for peace at 4 p.m. Dec. 8 at Smitty's Little Tavern, 2109 W. Franklin St. Anyone interested in participating in the program should call Miller at 423-5167 or send him an e-mail at elar1946@aol.com [edit]

Yoko's night with Graham and Kris in Moscow

Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2002 08:14:31 -0500 From: richard.layne Yoko's night with Graham and Kris in Moscow To: rjoly@cam.org Think US govt intelligence reports on Yoko went out with Nixon? Wrong! Article on Graham Greene in today's Guardian reveals otherwise. Full story at http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,851970,00.html Graham Greene's classic tale The Quiet American, released this week in cinemas starring Michael Caine in a potentially Oscar-winning role, is still stirring up controversy over its apparent anti-Americanism. [snip] Greene's fiction has often riled Americans, but it appears that in real life too, his views caused the US government some concern. Documents obtained by the Guardian under the US Freedom of Information Act disclose how officials in Washington went to extraordinary lengths to compile secret reports on the distinguished novelist over 40 years as he travelled the world in support of anti-US causes. He was monitored when he stayed up talking to Fidel Castro until five in the morning, as well as when he and Yoko Ono heard actor Kris Kristofferson "eschewing women and whisky to discuss God, war and peace". [snip] He was criticised for taking part in an international peace forum in Moscow to discuss nuclear disarmament in 1987. In a secret dispatch, American diplomats dismissed the gathering as a stunt which "produced little of lasting interest or value". But they conceded that the "turnout of well-known cultural figures was particularly impressive". The diplomats reported that in the evening, there was a concert of "many delights" such as folksongs and poetry, and American actor "Kris Kristofferson eschewing whisky and women for sober thoughts on God, war and peace", "all taken in by an audience including the likes of Yoko Ono in white mink, Gregory Peck, author Graham Greene and other luminaries".

Jon Hein, _Jump the Shark_

Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 12:51:26 PST Jon Hein has published a book called _Jump the Shark_. The phrase comes from Hein talking about the decline of once-favorite TV shows, when Hein famously said that Happy Days went downhill the moment "Fonzie jumped the shark." The book has sparked some interesting feedback, positive and negative: http://www.post-gazette.com/books/reviews/20020905hein5.asp http://www.theonionavclub.com/reviews/words/words_j/jumpthesharkwhengoodthin01.html But what caught my attention, and what would be of interest to you, fellow Onovox subscribers, is the fact that Hein had the nerve to opine on when the Beatles jumped the shark -- and his take was that it was when Yoko Ono was introduced into the mix. Not that Linda Eastman was around. Not that the other Beatles were having difficulty working together as evidenced in the movie "Let It Be" (and not just because Yoko was on the set!). Not that Paul was seriously considering going out on his own. No, it was Yoko who broke up the Beatles, or at least made them go downhill. Yet another example of how the myth is perpetuated. Time to go onto his website (www.jumptheshark.com) and protest, but it's such a jumbled site I can't figure out how to do that! (I personally think the website has jumped the shark :-) Sent in by Joanne / rats

Imagine: the art of John Lennon / Australia

[12/1/2002 6:07:17 AM | richard joly] Imagine: the art of John Lennon will comprise more than 100 of Lennon's whimsical sketches and handwritten song manuscripts, including a new print that makes its world premiere. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/12/01/1038712827712.html The sketches have been selected by Ono, who has an installation of her own work on show at the History of Happiness exhibition at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, from her collection of Lennon's original drawings. They include lithography, silkscreens, copper etching and serigraphy. [edit]

UNFOLDING RAGE: YOKO ONO AND EMINEM

[12/6/2002 6:38:06 PM | richard joly] UNFOLDING RAGE: YOKO ONO AND EMINEM by Kazim Ali http://www.lapetitezine.org/KazimAli.htm by Kazim Ali Eminem adopts an unpleasant strategy: using Marshall Mathers as a character in the album by Slim Shady--he can hide behind several different faces. Who is the artist? Who is the created persona? And who is it who goes home at the end of the day and has a tunafish sandwich? Particularly in the song "Kim" in which Kim Mathers--also supposedly a "character," and not the real-life wife of Mr. Shady--also, coincidentally, named Kim--is killed and placed in the trunk of Marshall's car. She's depicted verbally by--presumably--an actress. Unpleasant, because a listening public is meant to decide, apparently, to take the work as fiction, an expression of the true emotions--put perhaps not literal actions--of the artist, or, lastly, a real life threat of violence to come. The artist becomes a more complicated figure as he recedes from easy figuring. He becomes a threat as he unwinds. It may be equally impossible to divorce Yoko Ono from her context........... Kazim Ali is a poet and performance artist whose recent poems and essays have appeared in Cross-cultural Poetics, Washington Square, and Hayden's Ferry Review. He teaches at the Culinary Institute of America.

about instructions for leaving

[12/6/2002 6:49:58 PM | richard joly] about instructions for leaving xchristina ray http://www.glowlab.com/about.html http://www.glowlab.com/ray/leaving.html Once when I was leaving Japan I looked out the window of the airplane at the signs on the runway. I imagined Yoko Ono sitting next to me, giving me an Instruction Painting called 'Painting for Leaving,' that went something like this: Read all the runway signs before takeoff. Transform the letters and numbers in your head during the flight. See if they match the different runway signs upon landing. Ever since then I can't help but do this when I travel. I also take a lot of pictures from planes, when I have a window seat. There are paintings in this series as well, but they are in progress so I haven't posted them to the site yet. [read about Yoko Ono's Instruction Paintings] was founded in January, 2002 by Brooklyn artist Christina Ray and musician Krou [Patrick Krouchia [edit]

Date: Fri, 6 Dec 2002 19:02:34 -0500 http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=17159 .....This is precisely why the battle over who wrote what heated up in 1996, when the CD booklet for the Anthology 3 album was being written. McCartney's lawyer and brother-in-law, John Eastman, demanded that eighteen songs -- including "Blackbird," "Get Back" and "Hey Jude" -- be credited solely to McCartney, with Lennon's name omitted entirely......... et etc etc I have some questions to mind. how would he know which *18* songs to choose ? Did he pick them out of a hat ?????? the only way to tell is if Paul told him the titles of the songs he feels are his alone. and please define 'zeal' in lawyerese / accounting terms ? As his legal rep, would John Eastman EARN more, if those songs were credited to Paul Solo ? Would'nt trying to change song credits without authorisation show him as a bad unprofessional lawyer ? I mean, I can understand that lawyers have duties /rules / instructions to follow up on without having to double check with their client all the time but this seems major. Also McCartney is on record as saying that Linda, as she was suffering from her cancer, asked Yoko directly herself about changing the credits of YESTERDAY [ I'm not sure if she asked about the other songs]. so basically Paul has asked, dying Linda has asked, his lawyer has asked. I wonder who will be asked to influence Y next ? Finally - I'd like to see the list of the other 15 songs Richard

The Ist verse came to me very quickly in the form of a childlike street-chant da da da da dadee dee da dee da ee a eeeh. The piano intro I've had hanging around in my head for a few years-the chords and melody followed naturally from this. The middle eight was "conceived" to finish off the song. I think it works as a song. Of course, there is always room for improvement-..otherwise I wouldn't make any more. The 3rd verse came to me in an 8-seater plane. It's a song for children. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Does anyone know what PEter Watkins talked about with johnandyoko ? r. http://www.ihousephilly.org/ARTS/film.html WAR IS... Films of Conflict, Resistance and Hope January 3 - 26, 2003 How can we make sense of the incomprehensible? How can we speak of the unspeakable? What is "war"? The vocabulary of film allows us a unique way to ask these questions and, perhaps, gain perspective on our own particular predicament. Through the month of January, Film @ International House presents the work of directors who have struggled with these questions and investigates the phenomenon of war in its various manifestations: the brutality and folly of conflict, bravery and valor, the despair of victims, the inexactitude of history, the rage of propaganda and mass hysteria and, lastly, the cry of reason in the form of protest and resistance Friday, January 10 ~ 8:00pm THE WAR GAME dir. Peter Watkins, UK, 1966, 16mm, 47 mins, b/w In this highly controversial dramatization of the aftereffects of a nuclear attack on England, director Peter Watkins claims to have used "mathematical logic" to estimate the likely experience-both logistic and personal-of nuclear war. Filmed in what would become the director's trademark "semidocumentary" style, The War Game interrogates the clash between subjective and ob-jective forms and refuses to allow the viewer a safe distance from the issues it presents. With: BED IN dir. Yoko Ono, US/Canada, 1969, 16mm, 61 mins, b/w Inspired by a phone call from filmmaker Peter Watkins, on May 26, 1969 newlyweds John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved into Room 1742 of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Canada and for the next seven days they talked about peace to anyone who cared to listen. Bed In documents the couple's honeymoon in Canada and features conversations about peace with Timothy Leary, journalist Al Capp, Allen Ginsberg, and Tommy Smothers, among many others. Presented in collaboration with Philadelphia Record Exchange, 618 South 5th Street, Philadelphia

Sun, 22 Dec 2002 10:33:46 -0500 hi, this is a really really nasty article. Dead Beatles for Christmas Why were their solo albums so awful? By David Samuels Updated Friday, December 20, 2002, at 11:45 AM PT snip : No matter how controlling and awful Yoko Ono might have been, there is no way that she can be held responsible for the awfulness of Lennon's solo career. snip: Is McCartney insecure? Is he jealous of Lennon? Is there money involved? All of these questions are more interesting than Back in the U.S., an album that provides listeners with a rough idea of what it would be like to have Paul McCartney play your wedding. full text http://slate.msn.com/id/2075852
